ABS membership is neither currently, nor has ever been restricted to scholars of African descent. Their interests, however, define the focus of the organization's work. Almost 90% of our members are also members of the American Sociological Association. ABS membership is on an annual basis and is due in January of each year.

Student Involvement. ABS sponsors an annual graduate student paper competition with a cash prize and has a standing committee specifically charged with attending to the needs and interests of African-American graduate students. Graduate students are encouraged to attend and present papers at the annual conferences, serve on panels, and take an active role in the organization. These conferences are designed, in part, to afford students the chance to develop professional and personal connections with others having similar interests.

Listserv. ABSLST-L is designed to ease communication among ABS members and other researchers, including graduate students. Issues and problems confronting African Americans are legitimate for examination on ABSLST-L. The primary focus of the discussion on the listserv centers on these issues as they are relevant to deepening our social scientific understanding of concerns that impact the black community. While the major focus is on social science, historical, literary and other analyses relevant to the black community, including the wider African diaspora, are welcome. Members and colleagues are welcomed to participate in discussions on the Association's listserv. The list belongs to the subscribers. Subscribers are encouraged to participate, with the aim of creating a "virtual community."

Subjects of potential interest to subscribers might include:
